August 7 Meeting
Bill Thoms to speak on orchids of the Philippines
At our next Houston Orchid Society meeting on Thursday, August 7, Bill Thoms will speak on “Orchids of the Philippines.” The presentation will cover the six weeks that Bill spent hunting orchids (primarily Bulbophyllums) in the Philippines. It covers the people, the culture, as well as the environment for growing orchids.
Bill Thoms and his wife, Doris Dukes, have received more AOS awards for culture than anyone in the world. The total is 105 so far in 30 genera with 52 in his specialty area, the Bulbophyllum alliance. Bill is the author of Bulbophyllums; the Incomplete Guide, From A to WHY? as well as an e-book that includes five years of videos covering every aspect of growing different orchid genera; all the articles he has written for magazines around the world; a 1,500-picture photo library in incredible detail; and videos of repotting everything from flasks to dividing giant plants.
The meeting begins at 7:30pm at First Christian Church, 1601 Sunset Boulevard, Houston.
Bill Thoms is also a featured speaker at the Annual Summer Workshop on August 9. Get all the details and register for the workshop here.
