Workshop Was Successful and Fun! President’s Message—September 2022

Thanks to a large group of HOS members, the August 6 workshop was a good success. It was fun to spend a day learning about our favorite plant from the experts, Claude Hamilton and Thanh Nguyen. Along with longtime and new members there were many out-of-town participants. I always learn more about growing and judging orchids at this annual event. Thank you to the Show Chair, Randy Johnson, and especially to Winnie Yap, our hard-working Treasurer.

New things will happen at the September meeting. First, FOOD! There will be a selection of snacks prepared by club members, opening at 7 pm for your enjoyment. Due to time restraints, the table will be cleared at the beginning of the break after the program.

I appreciate your patience at previous meetings where there were only packaged snacks. Please check the sign-up sheet if you want to participate in October and November. James Nelson, the 2022 refreshments chair, will be happy to help you. Traditionally, the December meeting is a potluck, and all members are welcome to bring food.

During the September meeting, a Nominating Committee ballot will be passed out to the members present. Please vote for three members on the ballot. The three elected will recommend the 2023 slate of officers during the October meeting, and the election will take place at the November meeting. There will be officer positions as well as committee posts to fill for 2023. I encourage everyone to consider becoming involved in HOS in 2023!

Thanks to the efforts of the Culture Club Committee, there will be a program on September 18 at Denny Haase’s Spring Orchids. See Jay Balchan’s article for details. An invitation will be emailed to members as well.
