Election of Officers and Regular Activities Scheduled for November Meeting

Busy, busy! So many things are happening as everyone is starting to get “back in the swing of things.” Covid lockdowns are subsiding, and meetings and events are again in person. Still, I encourage everyone to keep up with your vaccinations, especially the boosters and flu shots.

If you are not feeling well, please stay at home and use your computer or phone to attend via Zoom to keep up with the programs and announcements. The Zoom link is emailed to all members about a week before the regular meeting. If you want to share the meeting link, that is certainly permitted, just as if you were bringing a friend to a meeting.

Our next meeting is set for Thursday, November 3, at 7:30pm. We gather at First Christian Church. Please come a bit early to enjoy snacks and visit with our members. You can browse the plants featured in the raffle hosted by Ken Whitmire. The silent auction table is managed by Frank and Cherie Lee. Those plants are grown by members who want to give others a chance to adopt a Houston-grown plant. Brad Miller signs in plants for the “Show and Tell” table. After the break at the end of the speaker’s presentation, each plant on the table is described and discussed by one of our very knowledgeable members. The speaker at the meeting often brings unique offerings to purchase. Information about this month’s speaker is covered by Stephen Gallagher, the current VP of Speakers.

The above information is about what happens at a regular HOS meeting. In addition, November’s meeting will be the occasion for election of 2023 officers. The slate is listed in another article this month, and the floor will be opened for nominations. If there are no nominations, then the slate will be elected by group acclamation.

December’s meetings are always a bit different. Everyone is encouraged to bring an offering for a pot luck buffet. The first order of business will be the installation of officers. December’s program will be a live orchid auction to benefit the HOS Judging Center. The plants will be a mix of purchased plants and donations from members. Sometimes these offerings are unique and quite special, so be prepared to join the bidding and banter.

Because the end of November is generally busy, expect to get the meeting invitation and Zoom link email sometime before Thanksgiving. There will be more details shared in that message and in my President’s message the same time next month.
