So Much Going On, Come Join the Fun!

Alrighty! First month of the new year is under our belt. Houston Orchid Society is coming out of the pandemic, and everyone is excited to be getting together again. I hope you all come to enjoy the programs as well as the opportunities to get more plants at the monthly raffle and silent auction. In addition, we are resuming the refreshment plan. Refreshment Chair James Nelson is lining up volunteers for each month to bring refreshments. More hands make light work, so please respond and sign up to bring refreshments for all to share.

Another HOS offering is Culture Club Sunday get-togethers. Two separate groups, Newcomers and Intermediate Growers, have been opened to all members and meet on announced Sunday afternoons at special places such as a member’s home or at a local grower. I know the committee of Don Ghiz, Jay Balchan, and Rick Hepler are brainstorming to come up with unique gathering places. Watch your email and check the website, as these events are a super way to meet others and learn more about growing orchids.

Just a reminder that every person has to literally “pay dues” to participate. If you have not paid your dues you have been notified more than once via email. If your dues are not paid by February 4, your name will not be included in the printed 2023 Member Directory. Members who do not renew by March 1, 2023, will be removed from the email notification system. We treasure each and every member and hope you are all able to continue to grow our organization! (P.S. You can renew right here on the website!)

The big news for Spring is the Annual Orchid Show and Sale, which takes place at Memorial City Mall. The weekend begins on Thursday March 2, about 6pm when we meet at the mall in the hallway atrium next to Dillard’s. Expect a pizza party, and bring your groomed orchids to showcase in the HOS exhibit. Everyone will have a task, so come prepared to learn and to work. It’s fun! Show Chairs Holly Miller and Jay Balchan have added a new feature for the vendors to sell more than just orchids. Tropical plants and aroids will be on sale for the first time at a Houston Orchid Society Show. In addition to setting up the show, volunteers are needed to assist the judges on Friday evening, to staff the HOS information table during show hours, and then dismantle on Sunday afternoon. Be sure to add your name to the sign-up sheets at the February meeting. That’s Thursday, March 2, through Sunday, March 5. The Show and Sale are open to the public on Saturday and Sunday.

See you all on February 2 at First Christian Church!
