Laurie Skov to Discuss Dendrobiums at the February 3 Meeting
With our February meeting moving to Zoom, we have decided to switch two of our speakers, which means Laurie Skov will speak virtually at our February meeting. Dave Sorokowsky will be rescheduled for a month where he can appear in person later this year. We will work with Dave to coordinate all orchid pre-orders that have taken place so far.
Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Laurie Skov has been growing orchids for more than 30 years. He retired from BP Amoco in 1999 and turned his orchid obsession into a business in 2001. He is the owner of Orchids & Tropicals in Santa Fe, Texas. Along with his wife, Sheila, they maintain 5,000 square feet of greenhouse, a tropical jungle, and four acres of pecan trees. Laurie has served as the president of the Houston Orchid Society and as the VP of the Galveston Bay Orchid Society.
Laurie holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Indiana University and a master’s degree in physical chemistry from the University of Illinois. He also served in the Peace Corps as a teacher in Western Samoa at Samoa College. His and Sheila’s business specializes in growing heat- and humidity-tolerant plants. Their collection includes many unique species, including Laurie’s favorite wild child, the Stanhopea.
Laurie Skov will speak to us on Dendrobium culture with an emphasis on Nobile Dendrobiums at 7:30pm on Thursday, February 3. Please watch your email for a link to join the Zoom meeting.
