First Culture Club Meeting Held March 27

Member Carolynne White hosted the first HOS Culture Club meeting on March 27 at her home, where she has a lovely courtyard with orchids and other plants and a screened porch with an array of Phalaenopsis.

Jay Balchan and Rick Hepler organized the meeting, which is a combination of the previous Newcomers and Intermediate groups. Rick demonstrated his method of growing plants in semi-hydro, and a range of topics were discussed among the group of about 15 attendees. In addition to semi-hydro, the group covered questions about scale and black rot, types of bark media (Orchiata and Kiwi), the climate in Houston (nothing settled there), orchid viruses (Cymbidium mosaic and Odontoglossum ringspot), sanitizing tools and pots, growing Cymbidiums in Houston, and how to repot those small new “plugs.”

Newcomers and oldcomers alike enjoyed sharing information and admiring Carolynne’s wide assortment of plantings.
