May was an exciting month for judges in the Houston Judging Center. It started on May 10 with the Galveston Bay Orchid Society Show, which was the spring SWROGA show. It was a nice-sized show with 226 plants. Eighteen judges from five judging centers granted five awards:

• Show Trophy went to Daria Souvorova’s exhibit
• An AM of 83 points was given for John Christy’s beautiful Cattleya Jungle Nobility ‘Mickie’
• Larry Baker’s Tetramica caniculata ‘LIB’ received an AM of 80 points
• Jana Butcher’s exhibit on the topic of light was awarded an Educational Certificate
• Houston’s first-ever Certificate of Meritorious Arrangement was granted for Joyce McMillian’s cut flower arrangement in the shape of a cake

I have to mention the delicious potluck lunch provided by the GBOS. One of the perks of being a judge is getting to enjoy good food!

Monthly judging on May 17 was slow because any blooming plants were sent to the GBOS show the previous week. Only four plants were presented, with one being awarded:

• A cultural award was given to Stephen Moffitt’s Oeceoclades/Eulophia calcarata, which received a CCM of 82 points.
