Here are the results of the Houston Judging Center’s work in July, beginning with the Baton Rouge Orchid Society’s Show July 6, 7, 8, and then in Houston on July 16.
There was one AOS award granted for the BROS exhibit (82 points), “Backyard Orchids.” Eleven plants were nominated plants from the exhibits, but no quality awards.
At the monthly judging July 16, we added two students to our roster of judges, Rosalvina Guimerans and Brent Arnspiger. Don Ghiz was reinstated as “active” after a medical absence—a huge welcome back! Important note: The center is actively seeking volunteers to serve as clerks (training is free!). You do not need to be an expert in orchids, just interested and willing in spirit to carry out clerical tasks like entering plants and refereeing their distribution in teams. Not a lot of paperwork but lots of fun.
We had two awards this month, both to Sheila and Laurie Skov, favorite sellers and knowledgeable enthusiasts in Santa Fe, Texas.

Our Summer Workshop on August 6 will be dynamite, so do not miss it. At $60 per person it is a bargain, and paid attendants have an added attraction, a festive visit to my home to meet and greet our speakers, followed by a two-block walk to Candente on Richmond Avenue for a dutch-treat dinner. I’m hoping for a huge crowd. You can also offer to help (set up, clean up, be a door-keeper), and if you wish to bring an appetizer, it would be welcome!
