The Houston Orchid Society Inc. (HOS) is a
non-profit organization representing a group of people who share a
fascination with orchids. The HOS was organized November 15, 1945 and
has the distinction of being the second society in the United States to
affiliate with the American Orchid Society (AOS) on December 23, 1946.
The HOS was granted the Distinguished Affiliated Society Service Award
at the AOS Members Meetings in Houston in October 2002. They wrote:
This society has a long history of service to the AOS
and the orchid growing community. Founded in 1945, its members have
worked to educate the public, and specialist orchid growers by hosting
annual orchid workshops and frequent public shows. The society has
supported the Houston Judging Center and has been the source of many
excellent volunteer leaders and committee workers for the AOS. Its
members are to be congratulated on their great contributions to the
enjoyment of orchids. The DASSA award is presented annually to an
Affiliated Society(s) in recognition of sustained, outstanding
contributions in areas of service and support in the field of
orchidology.
The HOS is a member society of the
Southwest Regional Orchid Growers Association (SWROGA;www.swroga.org),
and is affiliated with the Orchid Digest Corporation (ODC), and the
International Phalaenopsis Alliance (IPA).
The HOS is recognized as a tax-exempt organization under Section
501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service code. Contributions to the HOS
(and the affiliated Houston Judging Center) are tax-deductible. |
